Brussels HotelsThe Global AIDS Action Network (GAAN) is a small project of the Tides Center. Its mission is to involve the American AIDS community in global AIDS activity.

Since inception in 1994 GAAN has undertaken a wide range of activities to provide information and promote the involvement of US AIDS groups in global AIDS activities. In 1995 GAAN co-founded (with the Global Health Council) the International Issues Working Group of the NORA AIDS Coalition. (NORA is the principle policy coalition of the American AIDS movement.) GAAN served as co-chair of the Working Group from 1995 though 1999.

GAAN was one of the first US AIDS organizations to testify before Congress for an increased response to the AIDS pandemic (in 1994) and to advocate with many federal agencies for an improved global AIDS programming. Our educational activities around many aspects of global AIDS policy remains a central part of our work.

hotel rooms SolnaGAAN was an early supporter of both UNAIDS and the Global Fund, arguing that US groups should strongly support both institutions. We continue to serve on the UNAIDS US Team. From 1994 though 1996 GAAN served on the governing board of ICASO and remains a member of NACASO.

GAAN prefers to work in partnership with other organizations and is currently working on joint projects with both the International Council for Research on Women and the Global Campaign for Microbicides. We have received support from many different sources including the MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Gilman Foundation, Lloyd Foundation, UNAIDS and USAID.

GAAN is, and seeks to remain, a small project functioning with minimal staff and a small, but involved, Advisory Board. For more information contact Paul Boneberg at GlobalAIDS@aol.com or 510-601-8901.
