| Windows'98Windows 9xs days are numbered. Microsoft finally made it official. After the release of Windows 98 next year, Microsoft will shift from Windows 98 technology to Windows NT technology for both corporate and consumer operating systems products.
From 1999 and beyond, the successor to Windows 98 will be based on the NT technology, said Jim Allchin, senior vice president of the personal and business systems group at Microsoft, in his keynote speech at the company's Professional Developers Conference.

Windows 98 and Windows NT 5.0 are already beginning to converge. They will have the same device model, the same plug-and-play technology, and the same interface.
