| Division III National Championship
In 1981, after a 23 year absence from a football program at West Georgia College, West Georgia reemerged with an NCAA Division III Program. The Braves went 9-1 that year and reached the NCAA South Region Title Game but fell short to Widener College 10-3 to end a spectacular premier season.
The following year would prove to be much more amazing. West Georgia not only went undefeated in 1982 but beat Widener in the South Region Title Game in overtime 31-24 and continued on to beat Bishop 27-6 in the NCAA Semifinals. This matched West Georgia up with Division III powerhouse Augustana for the National Championship Game which West Georgia prevailed in 14-0 and took the 1982 Division III National Championship.
What might appear more impressive than the obvious National Championship of 1982 were the numbers.
During the '82 regular season West Georgia's Defense only allowed an average of 4.5 points per game during regular season play. When adding three playoff games during the same season including a overtime game against Widener the average score allowed was only 5.91 points per game. At the same time the offense was scoring an average of 42.11 points per game in only their second season in NCAA action. Including the playoffs the offense was scoring an average of 37.58 points per game.
An interesting side note was that in 1982 West Georgia beat Central Florida 41-7 at Central Florida. Just 15 years later, Central Florida would be competing at a Division I NCAA level (moving three divisions) and earning massive amounts of money from television revenues. This goes to prove proximity to population and support behind a program can mean everything!
Following the '82 season, West Georgia was litterly forced to move to Division II with nothing more to prove at the Division III level and few teams that wanted to schedule them. This was a move that would take the program and administration a decade + to make competitive once again going through three coaches and many seasons of noncompetitive action against seasoned experienced teams in the Gulf South Conference and Division II.
The 1982 Division III Championship is something the school and program will never forgot and can be deemed as a beacon and foundation for the eventual success and turnaround of the Division II program at West Georgia. |
