Recommendations to southern Nation ASOs
On Involving US Groups in Global AIDS Activities

1. Southern ASOs should accept that US groups must have their assistance to work effectively on any global AIDS issue, including advocacy within the US. Therefore, where possible, southern groups should assist their US colleagues who are seeking to undertake global AIDS activity.

2. In this regard the most important assistance southern groups can render their US colleagues is honest and upfront information on their international work, including advocacy within the US.

3. Southern groups should enter into true two-way partnerships with US AIDS groups where this is cost effective and has clear benefit to both groups.

4. It is essential that southern groups that seek support, but not partnership, from US groups be clear and not enter an artificial relationship.

5. Southern groups should accept that US groups seek relationships with them to receive benefit as well as to offer assistance and, therefore, consider how they can assist their US colleagues.

6. Southern groups should support the creation of a new partnership mechanism that

a. Facilitates southern groups initiating partnerships with northern groups

b. Supports southern groups having autonomous funding to engage in these partnerships

c. Provides a means by which multiple partnering groups can support each other (i.e., a support and communication network among partnering groups.)
