Helsingborg Hotele en promocionInternational Students NOT Cash Cows

23 March 2004

luxury hotels in AlbuferiaInternational Students call on Australian University Vice-Chancellors to stop the fee hikes. As University Councils around the country are considering the 25% HECS increase, international students around the country are anxious about the future of their fees.

In a deregulated environment, universities have been left to set their own fees." Supported by the belief that price elasticity has no effect on demand, there is no limit to how exorbitant international student fees will be in the next five years" said Adrian Wong, National Convenor of the National Liaison Committee for International Students in Australia (NLC).

Universities around the country have put in place policies to change current practice for international student fees. At the University of Melbourne annual indexation has been approved by the Council. If this trend continues, international students will no longer be able to plan ahead for the additional increase in fees each year.

The National Union of Students have called a National Day of Action on 31 March. International Students will participate in this rally to send a message to institutions that they will no longer be silent about the treatment of international students as cash cows.
